Part III - No Progress

Last July - see, Suburbs in the City Part I - a $5m housing project was announced. Rev. Darius Pridgen - True Bethel - and Mayor Brown addressed the small crowd. By December the eight houses that stood in the way had been demolished - see, Part II. I checked out the site the other day expecting to see some signs announcing the project. Nothing.
IMG_7957
At last year's press event and as reported by Buffalo Rising - here - the project was scheduled to have been completed this past July.
The demolition is expected to be over in a few weeks, and the new homes the Reverend described as West Coast eclectic should be fully completed at this time next year. "This won't be the type of housing you would typically see here," Rev. Prigeon said, "but the residents should be very proud.
Located at the end of Woodlawn Avenue, the site is one block away from the chemical and toxic dump that was part of the Michael Heyman Company lead smelting and refinery from 1917-1978. According to the DEC, 858 East Ferry Street was remediated in November 2007, see - East Ferry Street Superfund Site.

The experience and persistent auto-immune health problems involving residents in this East Ferry/Grider Street neighborhood is well documented. Ujima Theater hosted Behind the Fence in 2007, a theater performance that brings lupus and lead poisoning linked to this toxic location into focus. Last year WBFO's Bert Gambini, in a riveting interview, talks with Donna Jackson Nakazawa - here, on Meet the Author who wrote Autoimmune Epidemic: Bodies Gone Haywire in a World out of Balance - and the Cutting-Edge Science That Promises Hope (2008) - about this neighborhood.

Word from City Hall is that there are no environmental concerns at this location relating to the refinery and its toxic legacy. According to Masten District Councilman Demone Smith's office the city paid for the eight residential demolitions. There's still no announcement on True Bethel's site and no groundbreaking date has been established for the new builds according to Demone Smith's office. Calls to True Bethel have not been returned.

Kaleida/UB - September 2009

One of the City's largest construction projects - ever! - is underway on the east side. The site for Kaleida/UB's Global Vascular Institute and clinic is a block from Main at Goodrich, just north of Buffalo General Hospital - here's a map.
IMG_7890
This construction pic is from the City's parking ramp on Ellicott street. Over on the left is the construction crane at City Honors and the power house at Buffalo General Hospital is in the middle. On the right is the one block stretch of Goodrich Street that the City recently sold to Kaleida for $1.1m in July.

I'll be tracking construction progress over the project's duration with regular interval shots from this parking ramp perspective.

fixBuffalo readers may remember two substantial demolitions in the immediate vicinity. Hamlin House, the former UB Nursing School, was totaled 3 years ago - see, Hamlin House Demolition and 50 High Street came tumbling down a few months later as seen in some spectacular video shot by Chris Byrd. For background about the Global Vascular Institute and UB see April's - Medical Campus Meets Midtown. For demolition and construction pics, see - Kaleida/UB pic archive.

See - Kaleida Archive for additional information.

Johnnie B. Wiley - Progress Report

The Johnnie B. Wiley sports complex at Best/Jefferson and formerly known as the Rockpile, War Memorial Stadium and Civic Stadium - see, Somewhere in Masten for links to a nostalgic trip down memory lane - is finally seeing some action. The long awaited and debated reconstruction of the site and facilities is underway.
IMG_7899
I stopped by on Friday afternoon and spoke to a construction manager. He told me that the HUD monies that had been tied up for close to a decade and that were further delayed another 5 weeks recently were just released last week. So on Thursday the trucks started to roll and renovations started. In addition to a new scoreboard, locker rooms and running track, Johnnie B. Wiley will get a new astro turf for the football field and a new in and out field for the baseball part of the complex. The project weighs in just under two million.

Today only the huge gates, imposing concrete ruins along Jefferson Avenue, are all that remains of what was once the crown jewel of the City's long involvement with the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal program that brought employment to millions during the height of the Depression. Constructed started in 1935 on Civic Stadium. Demolition began in 1988.

I'll start posting periodic reconstruction and renovation pics in the next few weeks and hope to know more about all the players that are contributing to this project's success.

Tuesday's Primary - Vote

On Friday afternoon - while checking out some of my favorite abandonments and City owned houses - I spotted this Kearns for Mayor sign along one of most devastated streets in what must be one of the city's poorest neighborhoods - Sycamore Street.
IMG_7939
All over the City's east side there appears to be a growing level of support for Kearns. Support Mayor Brown once had and took for granted is taking a significant hit - in Masten and Ellicott and parts of Broadway/Fillmore. Signs of the disappointment and frustration city residents have been experiencing with the administration's wafer thin response to the crisis in the neighborhoods is palpable.

If you haven't checked out two of Buffalo's finest journalists about Tuesday's primary you should. Geoff Kelly, editor of Artvoice just published - The Race is On and Buffalo News reporter/blogger Jim Heaney posted - Sizing Up Mickey Kearns.

If you're a registered Democrat consider changing the course of the City, vote Kearns. I will.

Update - Monday 3pm.
Check out Jim Heaney's latest - Tuesday is a Referendum on Byron Brown.

St. Martin Village - Community Meeting

Silvestri Architects sent out the following announcement this week about one of the most exciting housing developments in the City - the heritage renovation of the former German Roman Catholic Orphan Home at the end of Dodge Street, near the 33. Here's the late July post - St. Martin Village.

City Honors - September 2009 update

The new all-high gymnasium and natatorium at City Honors are taking shape. I walked the site this afternoon and added a number of pics to the construction archive. Here's the site plan to help orient you to what's happening on Best Street.

There is a quality even meaner than outright ugliness or disorder, and this meaner quality is the dishonest mask
of pretended order, achieved by ignoring or suppressing the real order that is struggling to exist and to be served.
